Rumor: Sony is Working on a New Portable PlayStation

PSP2?

Now this is fun. After abandoning the handheld gaming market following the discontinuation of PlayStation Vita in 2019, Sony might be making a jump back into the portable market. It's not all that surprising given the roaring success of Nintendo Switch. Although pundits like to pretend Nintendo exists in its own world separate from PlayStation and Xbox, the reality is that Sony and Microsoft are keenly aware of the massive numbers Switch has managed to push. Particularly given how this success follows after every games journalist under the sun has been screaming that consoles were going to die off as far back as the PlayStation 3 era.

No, rather than go quietly into the proverbial night, Nintendo has managed to be as relevant and impactful as a hardware manufacturer as ever, and it's due in no small part to Switch's unique hybrid nature as both a home and mobile console. It seems that Sony is hoping to do something similar, with the idea being to build off of its PlayStation Portal peripheral. Apparently, the initial idea for the PS Portal was to make it a standalone device, which for unknown reasons fell through.

Sadly, whenever this PlayStation Portable/Vita successor does hit the market, it won't be anytime soon. It's believed that the device won't hit stores for years to come. Interestingly, Sony isn't alone in wanting to make a Switch-like mobile console, as Microsoft is also working on its own Xbox portable. We'll keep you all posted as we learn more.
