Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Announced

The console will launch later this year.

After what can only be described as an epic wait (seriously, this was years in the making) and an endless string of rumors (including one this week that said today might be the day the reveal would happen), Nintendo has finally deigned to show the public its successor to Switch. The new console is dubbed Nintendo Switch 2 and it is slated for a 2025 release. Give it a look in this trailer:

This reveal follows a litany of recent leaks that included some pretty accurate depictions of the console. While the look of the system was fairly well known, what remains a mystery are some of the finer details, like price and an exact release date. We do know, however, that the system will be backwards compatible with most original physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Switch 2 also boasts new Joy-Con that slot differently into the side of the console (the rumor mill is convinced that magnets are involved to an extent). The dock and kickstand have also seen a redesign compared to their older counterparts.

It's also worth noting that the trailer seems to provide a brief glimpse of Mario Kart 9 (or whatever name Nintendo ends up giving the game), while no other software was shown off. So, definitely some progress for fans, but now the wait begins for more details. They should be forthcoming on Wednesday, April 2, which is when a special Nintendo Switch 2: Nintendo Direct broadcast will air. Hopefully then fans will find out much more about the hotly anticipated console.
